I suspect that going to an Israeli comics convention might be a little anticlimactic after Dragon*Con. Or, then again, it might be comfortingly familiar. At any rate, the food will be better. Too bad I fell asleep at 3 AM last night and then woke up at 8 AM this morning.

My brother still wants TPBs to catch up on the latest Green Lantern events. IDK, I think he'll probably end up being disappointed.
lea_hazel: A frowning white theater mask (Feel: Sad Face :()
Yesterday (Sunday) after a long weekend of increasingly difficult breathing, I hauled ass to the emergency medical center. I saw a nurse and a doctor, got ventolin inhalation that made me shakey, and got a chest x-ray that showed no spots. By tonight (Monday) the inhalation has pretty much worn off, although I'm not quite as badly off as I was on Saturday, for example. Anyway, I only need to make it through tomorrow and then on Wednesday morning I get to convince an allergy doctor to prescribe me something that will let me sleep at night and function during the day.

I've been watching TV and reading Narnia fanfic and rewriting the DC universe in my head. Good times. Not that I won't be unbelievably grateful when I don't get tired just from standing, and can do things like go to the supermarket, cook a decent meal (something better than mac & cheese), go out with friends or, heaven forbid, get back on track with the Pilates. I've also (sadly) been too tired to write, which leaves me way behind on my writing goals. At least my schedule for the next semester is pretty much set, although I do have to figure out the research project oh noes.

My rib muscles hurt from coughing a bunch.
lea_hazel: Wonder Woman (Fandom: DC)
So I should mention that my brother and I got the primer for the new DC Comics universe. I had a whole bunch of feelings about a lot of things and I still have a lot of conflicting feelings. Mainly we both felt that it was nice to be excited for new comics, for a change, since our subscriptions were getting stale and I was constantly falling behind due to not being interested enough in anything. I mean, we'll never go back to the days when I was just getting into comics and I read every issue between 3 and 5 times a month, but it's still nice to be actively looking forward to something.

One of the problems with (US, superhero, mainstream) comics fandom is that it is deeply exhausting. After we made the decision to drop a bunch of titles and subscribe to five of the DCnU ones, I started checking out some websites and blogs that I haven't checked in years. subscribing to things on Twitter, reading [community profile] scans_daily posts and the like. This reminded me why I burned out on all of those things and retreated to quieter, more fun grounds.

A lot of the new titles look just as bad and just as inaccessible as they were before, meaning there's no point trying to get invested in Batman or Green Lantern, because it's just the same old drek. Supergirl and Wonder Woman both looked like they might be good, but more in a wait-for-the-trade way. We both immediately knew we wanted Blue Beetle, because we loved the previous run, which we own in TPB. Its only flaw was the dense, incomprehensible origin, and that seems to have been done away with.

Aside from BB, we're getting Justice League (which my brother is very interested in), Justice League Dark, and Superboy. The latter was a late addition based on a preview that looked very exciting. ETA: Haha I forgot Animal Man. We're also getting that and it's pretty exciting.

My flight leaves tonight. I am taking my laptop with me, but of course I'll be doing a lot of stuff all day and spending very little time online. The hotel has paid wireless, so hopefully I'll at least check my e-mail most evenings.

Anyway, the con starts Friday and so Thursday will probably be a low-key day to recover from plane travel etc.

Dragon*Con gives us the opportunity to be exposed to a lot of stuff that doesn't usually get exported. Things like indie comic books are sometimes hard to come by in Israel, unless there's a source I'm not aware of. Shipping costs are also an issue. If you can think of something I might enjoy that I'll be able to find in the D*C dealers' room, please drop me a note. I am frequently frustrated by seeing these little projects that I can't quite support.

Anyway, I need to finish packing and stocking up my MP3 player with music for the airport. There's no sure way to know how long the security procedures will take, and so we might spend quite a lot of time being bored silly.

Fandom

lea_hazel: Don't make me look up from my book (Basic: Reading)
This past week I got anonymous kudos on (almost) all my AO3 fics in succession. I am pretty sure it was all the same anon, since there was a hit on my [livejournal.com profile] captchalogue collection, then one each on a bunch of fics that don't usually get much attention. Including one totally obscure Veronica Mars fic.

[community profile] fannish5: Fanon 'facts'. I'm using the definition of fanon where I can include stuff that's just in my head, as opposed to "not actually canon but commonly accepted in fandom as such."

Lost Girl: Until canon actually states otherwise (which seems pretty likely) I am still assuming that Trick possible spoilers through speculation )

Veronica Mars: Despite that it goes against everything canon says, including the trailer for the fourth season that never happened, I think Veronica would make a terrible FBI agent. I see her giving it her all, then being disappointed and burning out after about five years, going back to PIing but with better credentials. I know it's almost painfully noir, but hey, if the shoe fits.

Runaways: 1. To everyone's shock, Chase is the only one who eventually goes to college. 2. Although he'd never admit it, he comes to think of Victor as the best friend he ever had. 3. Molly becomes a superhero under her own name. 4. After her eighteenth birthday, Karolina goes on a traditional young adult 'finding herself' trip... in space. 5. Klara gets used to the whole time travel shtick and ends up settling down in the twenty eighth century.

MLP:FIM: Mr. and Mrs. Cake are Pinkie's second cousins - they share the illustrious laughing Grandma Pie. Pinkie takes much more after her grandma than either of her parents. Her dad was sort of a fluke/black sheep, and her sisters take after him: one inherited the rock farm and the other is an accountant.

Avatar: The Last Airbender: Once she proves herself trust-worthy, not to mention entertaining, Ty Lee enters a triad relationship with Sokka and Suki.

lea_hazel: I am surrounded by tiny red hearts (Feel: Love)
I want to do a whole post about the Paul Simon concerts because mksdauyfr jdaifuwiej ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and I believe that basically sums it up. So I will do that eventually, maybe tonight. For an old dude, he sure is energetic!

Also from Thursday I think I want to make a post elaborating about the Kushiel books. For the record, my thoughts re: those books include both positives and negatives, and also quite a lot of gentle loving mockery. I do love them! But in that special fannish way that goes 'lol!' a lot.

Memo to brain: it is not okay to want to make X-Men fanfic out of everything you read while studying for a genetics exam.

It's been eleventy billion years since I remembered to make a [community profile] fannish5 post, so I want to answer this week's but I can only think of one off the top of my head: When a character rejects another character romantically, I will never be able to ship them. Ever. If the ship manifests in canon I will resent it forever. All the examples I can think of are from Homestuck of course but I have a thing with characters getting what they want too often. When the 'what' that they want is a person, that magnifies pretty much exponentially.

Bottom line is I resent romantic entitlement in characters.

Feferi/Sollux on Homestuck. I mean, I like them, and I was never a TA/AA shipper (I pale ship them), so it didn't bother me. But even looking back, I don't think there was so much as a hint before the kiss. And after, there wasn't much about them being matesprits, right up until the end.

lea_hazel: The Little Mermaid (Genre: Fantasy)
So the theme for this year's sci-fi con, starting tomorrow, is time. The schedule looks pretty cool, my brother and I will probably be there all day tomorrow and most of Thursday.

These comics and SFF conventions have become a reliable touchpoint for me with Israeli SFF fandom, which is pretty cool. I still have no idea when the third book of the Whale of Babylon series is coming out, though. For all I know, it may never come out. D:D:D:

Anyway, if I ever get around to writing one of my ridiculous Hebrew fantasy ideas, it's good to know that I'll have someone to talk to about it. Specter Valley can't lie dormant forever, it would be so wrong.

Associating holidays with new comics is nice, even though I'm horribly behind on my comics reading.

Red

I am dying my hair red for Purim. The ratio of dye in my hair compared to, oh, everywhere else is preposterous. And when I say everywhere, I mean (among others): my ears, my neck, my T-shirt, my hands (and I was wearing gloves!), the sink, the comb, the towel, and some very artistic smudges on my face. I am an utter failure at hair-dying. But! I will make a fantastic Batgirl.

I still have a ton of dye left. Maybe once this starts fading I'll try again and my bathroom will look less purply-pinky-red in the end. What I dread is waking up tomorrow, looking in the mirror and seeing patches of brown all over. D: I forgot that there was more than one reason why I did streaks last time.

So today I had a biochemistry quiz and it wasn't as bad as I was dreading, and tomorrow I have a physiology quiz that I may not have time to study for :( because I am so tired and behind on everything. As part of an exercise in not working myself to a crying frenzy, the only thing I absolutely have to do tonight is finish my Excel exercise and mail it in, and that's only because it's, um, due. And tomorrow afternoon I'll have Happy Fun Catch-Up Time where I do a bunch of work so I'll be ahead next week.

Gretchen Lieberum is an amazing jazz singer who I discovered in high school through a music-loving internet friend, listened to constantly in the army, and then pretty much forgot about. Brazen Girl is one of my favorite songs ever.

These dudes made a book and it sold better than Glenn Beck's for one day, and now he's all pissed at them. I looked up Glenn Beck and now I wish I hadn't.

This dude tries to talk to evangelical Christians who are sincerely worried about gay teen suicide, but still believe gayness is a sin. While respectful and forthcoming, he in no way cuts them any slack (or sugarcoats, as he puts it). It's a fascinating read.

Jack Chick says that Halloween is Satan's birthday. I thought it was like All Saints' Eve or something? *shrug*

I feel that LOLtapirs pretty much speak for themselves.

Check it out, this dude doctor of philosophy (!) does pretty much exactly what I'd like to do. With my life, I mean. Altered intracellular calcium signaling!

To do: Eat soup and watch Lost Girl.

This post is an optical illusion. I am actually studying thermodynamics for my biochem quiz tomorrow, not posting.

So this week's [community profile] fannish5: Five of your favorite characters are going to a Halloween party. What costumes are they wearing?

My first thought was CrossGen characters, which is bizarre, because they went out of business about six years ago, so why would they pop up before more recent fandoms? Anyway, the thought of Giselle in a classic black witch's costume is too hilarious not to share. But for reals:

1. Kenzi from Lost Girl dresses as a harlequin clown, because there is nothing scarier than clowns.

2. Astrid from Fringe dresses in a gown and wimple which she did not buy in a Renn Faire, obviously, because she doesn't go to those, and whatever her loser ex told you to the contrary is nothing but a vindictive lie. She does look good in velvet, though.

3. Veronica Mars dresses as Carmen Sandiego FTW. You know she played the hell out of those games when she was twelve.

4. Jamie Madrox from X-Factor would dress as Cyclops if he wasn't afraid Cyke would toast him for his troubles. So he dresses like Indiana Jones. Not because Terry has a crush on Harrison Ford, though, because that would be weird.

5. Faith from BtVS has probably never been to a proper Halloween party in her life. She doesn't really get how the concept works and so Dawn makes her wear a classic purple Batgirl costume, which is truly a WTF choice. Halfway through the party she changes into one of Buffy's minidresses and they end up duking it out and spilling all the punch.

Geeky moment of the day: my classroom computer is numbered 616.
lea_hazel: Don't make me look up from my book (Basic: Reading)
I've got this weird feeling of teetering and being totally on top of everything, at the same time.

Yom Kippur went well. In the spirit of the holiday, the mother and I did a massive cleanse of clothes that I haven't worn in years, and now there's a big plastic bag full of great clothes (I really flatter my taste, I'm impressed with myself), which I hope will go to someone who can get good use of them. Other than that, we watched four movies, practically an Israeli tradition for those who don't really observe. My family has bizarre Jewish traditions.

Did you know Yom Kippur is totally trending on Twitter? It's in the scroll bar and everything. Even though it's been over for 18 hours and, um, there are only like 15 million of us or something? Strike that, I just wiki'd and it's more like 13 million.

Last week I finished reading a sci-fi romance that I got on a whim, back around Passover. Although I basically enjoyed it, I'm becoming increasingly convinced that romance novel plots end where I want them to begin. Almost the last line of the book was where I was thinking the story really gets started. Somehow, I don't think there are very many books based on the first few years of a relationship, in general, let alone specifically between a human and an alien. Then again, it had a psychic lesbian orgy, so it's not a total loss.

My new place is getting a fridge today. I'm optimistic.

Next week: ICON.

Princess Evil

Saturday, 7 August 2010 19:12
lea_hazel: Don't make me look up from my book (Basic: Reading)
[community profile] fannish5 of the week: Name your five favorite evil characters.

  1. X-Men: Magneto. There's something ludicrous and yet elegant about a villain who's simultaneously tragic and sympathetic, as well as a cackling, finger-steepling, gaudy-helmet-wearing overlord. FCOL, he founded a society called the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. But he's brilliant and filled with righteous rage, and underneath the trappings of comic book villainy there's a kind of disastrous misdirected fear that strikes true.

  2. BtVS: The Mayor. Villains are so often weighted down with all sorts of pointless shorthand characteristics, it's still hilarious to see an ultra-wholesome teetotaler plot doom and destruction. Seeing him become a father figure to his sword-arm is downright touching. And still, sufficiently easy to hate.

  3. Order of the Stick: Redcloak. I haven't even read the prequel (yet!) but Redcloak is a perfect counterpoint to the joke-cracking pile-o-bones he reluctantly calls boss. He's evil, but he's doing it for a cause, but he's definitely not just "technically" evil, and he's definitely dangerous. The idea that he might change alignment and find himself on the side of the heroes (for the right reward) is simultaneously impossible and highly appealing. If I were a different sort of fan, I'd probably be fighting tooth and claw to say he's not really evil, and he must be redeemed.

  4. AtLA: Azula. Many people two many terrible things throughout the series. Azula is the scariest, I think, even though Ozai is technically more dangerous. She's validated by being considered a success by her father, and by her obvious talent, intelligence and skill. It's the idea that she's a winner, that she's the hero of the story, that makes her so dangerous. Depite being terrifying (to me) and not at all sympathetic (again, YMMV), redeeming her is tempting just because it's such a waste.

  5. Probably most animated Disney villains could go here, but let's go with Ursula the sea witch. Sea witches are cool, dammit. Maleficent could work also, she's equally hammy and she's a freaking dragon.

I have weird definitions of things like "villain" and "evil" and so my list is a little weird, and actually neglects a lot of my favorite villains. I mean, the original post said "evil" and most of my favorite villains (or antagonists) are not really evil. Actually, I don't really believe in evil, I think. I definitely don't think I could ever write a really evil character. I used to have a bunch back when I role played a lot. I quite liked a lot of them, but nowadays, I don't think I'm up to it.

Maybe evil TS3 Sims count. I have a family of four that's evil, so maybe they count.

Catching up on my Buffy comics: seriously, what is this shit?

Wonder Woman was pretty cool. I think it's past time for a low-speed issue or two, though.

I really wish there was a teen superhero show on TV. It would be such an easy sell, too.

I am avoiding thinking about how the next four weeks are going to be hell on wheels, so have some random links:

I know I've become the world's fastest-declining Daily Squee addict, but the fennec fox and the capybara are exceptionally squee, even for me. Trufax: were it not for the various ludicrous Facebook games I play, I wouldn't even know what a fennec fox is.

FEMINIST HULK makes an exception for bell hooks. I am the last person in the interblags to know about feminist Hulk. And here is the actual twitter account.

I've been following fuck yeah, bisexuals for a while. I am always, always hungry for more bi blogs, and Tumblr puts a wealth of queerness at my fingertips. {o/

Cupcakes are a wonderful theme for tattoos, and I approve.

My excellent friend Hez visits Greece for the second time, basks in the sunny weather, and finds time to muse about international relations, tourism and the different approaches to archeology. Because apparently I have awesome taste in friends.

My brother finally got me to watch Across the Universe, which he is slightly obsessed with it. I'd seen some from the beginning and end, but my favorite parts are in the middle, so I didn't get the full experience. I Want You (She's So Heavy) was my favorite, both in the musical adaptation, in the story behind it, and in the choreography. It also got the song stuck in my head, so fair warning.

No matter how many times I visit My Food Looks Funny, Chrome will not save it in my history. It's so weird.
