Travel Time

So, I am flying to a friend's wedding. I did all the arrangements last minute because I was half-convinced I'd be unemployed by now. My flight is late tonight, lands there early Friday morning. Meanwhile I am trying to stick to my lists and focus on the fact that I can live without virtually everything. This is my go-to strategy for situations where forgetting something is virtually guaranteed.

I fly to the US on Thursday night (yes, I know that's the first time I've mentioned it on this blog). I booked what needed booking, described to my mother as "a tour of New York's airports", borrowed a suitcase, planned what clothes to take, started carefully scheduling the laundry cycles... and today I went bra-shopping.

Body talk, I guess )

Anyway, Age of Ultron was frothy but satisfying like a very artificial-tasting milkshake. My brother was naturally more forgiving of it than I was. Some issues I didn't bother bringing up, but I had to mention that the Wanda/Pietro storyline could be lifted right out of the movie with almost no impact. Natasha got an origin, apparently in lieu of actually getting a solo film like the boys. Wanda, though, felt pretty vacant to me.

Whedon's thing with emotionally-damaged brunettes again, I suppose. Or maybe I am being too harsh.

I have already broken every rule I ever set myself for being unemployed. Stayed up late playing Sunless Sea (killed another captain, too), put off sending out my CV, woke up at eleven this morning. I had planned to kick myself in the pants and take advantage of the morning to do grocery shopping and cleaning. At least yesterday I cooked and ate legitimate food, and also did a laundry. Although in fairness I had little choice, given the size of the laundry pile I brought back from Pittsburgh.

I'm flying out to Dragon*Con in a couple of hours. I really wanted to write a serious blog post before I left, but there was too much going on. I'll have my tablet with me so probably no posting at all because of awkward typing. So I guess I'll be back in a week plus. Don't burn anything down while I'm gone.

I don't want to keep packing because I'm tired, but if I don't pack I won't be going to Dragon*Con.

I mean. I will still go to Dragon*Con obviously. But I will have to change my plans substantially and it will add certain unnecessary complications. I think. Or maybe this way would actually be easier? I can't really tell anymore.

Anyway, I'm not all that exhausted that I can't go down to the pharmacy to buy a plastic bottle for my shampoo. Or cycle a laundry, or shower and wash my hair. It's only that sitting and staring at a screen out of inertia is lots easier.

Supposing I was in NYC (possibly elsewhere in the eastern US) in September or October, would that be relevant to anyone of my dear circle?

Sore muscles + congested nose + stabbing pain in throat = pretty sure it's a flu and not a cold.

And I only just got back from Petra a couple days ago, too. At least I wasn't sick in Petra.

Suspected hail, graupel and possibly snow over the (extended) weekend. What a good time to go visit Petra. A coincidence, but a serendipitous one.

The brother posted a huge amount (out of the even huger amount) of his photos from Venice and Florence to Facebook. I'm riffling through them and enjoying myself tremendously. I could see myself living in Florence for a bit. For a while, I mean, six months or a year, maybe a bit longer. If I could get a job there or something, I don't even know how people go about doing things like that.

Meanwhile I heard back from a beta and my very first DA fanfic is, I think, finally ready for posting. After miles of agonizing, naturally. I will let it sit for a few hours and then skim it one last time, and it'll go up tonight for the transatlantic morning afternoon crowd. Meanwhile I think I finished the Veronica Mars fanfic I've been agonizing over for literally years, but I desperately need an outside perspective. I will bribe and beg if necessary.

Today is still a holiday. Tomorrow I am going to Do Things. Not All The Things, but Things nonetheless.

Back from Italy, sporting some sort of infection with coughing and phlegm.

It rained the last couple of days, which was a relief from the exhausting, sweat-soaking heat.

My fridge contains half a carton of milk that's probably sour and little else. Luckily I was wise and stocked the freezer with neatly packed meals.

Tomorrow is a holiday again, new year and all that. Good timing for lots of honey.

I will wind down by playing some Dragon Age and then I will sleep. When I'm more together I will make a better post about all the wonderful things I saw and ate in Italy.

Florence was amazing. I could have easily spent a week there, there was so much that we didn't see. We covered the basics I guess, but I could have spent easily two whole days just in the Uffizi gallery. Definitely on my plan to return to Florence someday, especially since we didn't even see any of the countryside.

Venice was a little harder to enjoy, at least on the first day. Due to some dubious planning, we ended up walking for three solid hours with no time to stop or sit. The heat was oppressive and I was at the end of my rope. The second day was much better.

Now we're on our way to Rome on a train with patchy wifi. We have three days in Rome, or rather two whole days and this afternoon. I hope we'll get to see as much of everything as possible. Probably we will spend a whole day in the Vatican alone. Today I think we'll do less because I'm tired and I may have a cold. I don't want to push myself like on Sunday.

Once we get back the holidays start.

I suspect that going to an Israeli comics convention might be a little anticlimactic after Dragon*Con. Or, then again, it might be comfortingly familiar. At any rate, the food will be better. Too bad I fell asleep at 3 AM last night and then woke up at 8 AM this morning.

My brother still wants TPBs to catch up on the latest Green Lantern events. IDK, I think he'll probably end up being disappointed.

I've been sick since I got back from Atlanta. I'd had the usual allergic post-nasal drip, and then towards the end of our stay it abruptly clouded and I woke up one night with a fever. I went to the doctor and got some antibiotics, because he was worried about me wheezing and how it could turn into bronchitis.

I thought I was feeling better but now suddenly I have chills and a violent cough.

The good news is, Lost Girl is back! :D

Home At Last

So, I'm home at last. We landed at around three thirty in the afternoon, yesterday. Normally, Friday afternoon would be an awkward time to land, but it's the end of summer and so everyone is traveling, which means no Friday night dinner with the family. Good thing, too, since I'm ill and had no appetite. Right now it's just me, my brother and my father having a lazy weekend at home. Tomorrow I have to start thinking about getting back to routine.

Basically, most of the trip was great, although it was also exhausting. The flight home was terrible though and so right now I'm having a hard time focusing on the good parts. Airports are a nightmare but last night I took a cold pill and slept through the night so I guess I have nothing to complain about.

The next thing I need to worry about is next semester's schedule, but that can wait until tomorrow. Oh! And of course I'm looking forward to the new fall season, of which apparently Lost Girl has already started airing OMG yay.
lea_hazel: Don't make me look up from my book (Basic: Reading)
My flight leaves tonight. I am taking my laptop with me, but of course I'll be doing a lot of stuff all day and spending very little time online. The hotel has paid wireless, so hopefully I'll at least check my e-mail most evenings.

Anyway, the con starts Friday and so Thursday will probably be a low-key day to recover from plane travel etc.

Dragon*Con gives us the opportunity to be exposed to a lot of stuff that doesn't usually get exported. Things like indie comic books are sometimes hard to come by in Israel, unless there's a source I'm not aware of. Shipping costs are also an issue. If you can think of something I might enjoy that I'll be able to find in the D*C dealers' room, please drop me a note. I am frequently frustrated by seeing these little projects that I can't quite support.

Anyway, I need to finish packing and stocking up my MP3 player with music for the airport. There's no sure way to know how long the security procedures will take, and so we might spend quite a lot of time being bored silly.

lea_hazel: The outlook is somewhat dismal (Feel: Crash and Burn)
Last year, my brother and I wanted to go to Dragon*Con in Atlanta. Since it was only a day or two after my last exam, that fell through. This semester, I have only three exams and should be done with the last of them, worst case scenario, I'll be done in late July. So, after much angst we eventually decided to go.

When we were ready to book plane tickets, I discovered that I had no idea where my passports were, and hadn't seen them since before the move.

So now I have to go through all the bureaucracy of getting new ones, which is a huge pain in the ass. This while still keeping up with weekly assignments, lab reports etc. etc. Plus the fact that my sleep pattern is completely disrupted and I'm exhausted, which somehow meant that I fell asleep before 10 PM yesterday, and then couldn't wake up today before 10 AM.

Also it is supposed to be storming today, winter's last hurrah or whatnot.

In the end it drizzled a bit, but nothing super serious. I got one passport checked off my list, and also got a new ID card with my new address for my troubles. I still have to do the shopping, but I do not know if I'm up to it. I'm out of coffee, too. :(

Home now. Luggage got lost in transit. Awaiting delivery at my parents'.

Today we went to Durham, which is super hilly and was so hard on my feet and bronchi. The Cathedral in Durham is incredible, although I passed on climbing the tower because they had a warning sign for people with cardiac or respiratory conditions. Hez said it was three times as hard as St. Mary's Lighthouse, so probably a good call. My camera ran out of batteries almost immediately, so I have (almost) no photos even though the architecture is to die for and the woods and river are also lovely.
