lea_hazel: A frowning white theater mask (Feel: Sad Face :()
I have a couple of short blog posts queued for this week and next. No big, substantive reviews. Part of me still wants to get that aromantic post out of my system but I'm not sure how well I'd weather the process. Meanwhile I have been playing a lot of 7KPP and Affairs of the Court, which I probably still should review, at some point.

Other things in my tabs: Why Being a Writer is an Exercise in Cognitive Dissonance from Kameron Hurley's blog (via Goodreads). Coffintree Hill has a whole bunch of magazines and anthologies calls for submissions. I have been reading a fair amount of Asexual Agenda posts and links, lately.

Soon I will have a cellphone again.

Casil has immersed herself fully in a flawed understanding of disability that I tend to think of as the “character balance” fallacy. In a tabletop RPG, character types are generally written to be balanced, so that each player will have a fun and interesting experience. A swordfighter might be better at up-close combat but vulnerable to magical attacks, for example, while a mage might have the ability to shoot long-distance firebolts but be unable to wear much armor. Ideally, characters have equal advantages and disadvantages. Some games even have systems where you can “buy” advantages with disadvantages. Want more points to spend on more impressive spells? Find something that will make your character’s life more difficult, and maybe you can make that work.

Excerpted from Human flaws and disability: NOT the same thing by Tili Sokolov, because it struck me that it was an unusual but apropos perspective. I got there via Jim Hines' No, We’re Not All Disabled, a very even-toned takedown of the original blog post in question. Note that the original post, which Hines quotes extensively, is the kind of ablist bullshit that makes a weird vein pop in my forehead, so. Content note to those who don't need that toxicity in their lives on a Friday afternoon.

Now this just reminds me that I need to write more about "how (not to) write disability" and I've been putting it off.

Hello 2016

Year, we got off to a rough start. I acknowledge this. I'm not sure how I feel about you just yet, but I am willing to give you a chance.

Tomorrow, my 2015 writing retrospective will go up on the WordPress blog. I will probably crosspost it here. It has charts! And numbers! And colors!

I also have some Yuletide recs that I've been gradually accumulating. I will post them once I've grown a spine and read the reviews on my own story.

Meanwhile I'm drafting a review for Solstice.

I wonder if the Mexico and Brazil IPs that are showing up in my blog hits for today, the 11th, are the same as the ones from the same countries that showed up yesterday the 10th.

I probably spend too much time wondering about my blog hits.

Update

lea_hazel: The outlook is somewhat dismal (Feel: Crash and Burn)
The holidays and a short illness have thrown off my work schedule and I ended up not updating for longer than I intended.

Today was a good writing day and I have completed the first draft of my [community profile] femslashex assignment pretty much on schedule. I'm pleased with it right now but let's see how I feel about it in two-three days when I reread it.

My wordpress blog is now linked from the sidebar, alongside my AO3 and Tumblr.

I do still intend to blog about things of a bit more substance, but as it's getting rather late and I haven't yet had dinner, that will have to wait for later this week.

I posted "the Margaret Atwood" on a thread about geek dating and my comment received two downvotes. I shall wear them with pride.

Then they went on to talk about how pretty girls never have any problems. #misandry4lyfe

lea_hazel: The outlook is somewhat dismal (Feel: Crash and Burn)
Reading comments on a blog post, there's this one repeat commenter who (quite accidentally) granted me a vast epiphany about why people have such a hard time being around people who are depressed. Read more... )

It's not that I didn't realize that depression makes people hard to be around. I knew it on some level, it's pretty clear. Now I just feel like I have a clearer insight into the process by which depressive thinking wears down not just oneself, but one's friends and acquaintances as well.

Jailbreaking it

I installed Jailbreak the Patriarchy based on an article on Autostraddle thinking that I would probably cave and remove it immediately but ASDFGHJKL; it makes reading IO9 so tolerable I wish I could install it on TV shows.
lea_hazel: I am surrounded by tiny red hearts (Feel: Love)
I love the show Lost Girl, but I hate the title. Not just because it fails to fit the show or the character at all, and not just because it makes the show and the character sound way less interesting and fun than they are. Also because it makes it very hard to search for on Tumblr. The tagged/lost-girl page has a lot of stuff on it that has nothing to do with the show and there are not enough LG tumblrs woe.

Life is hard when you don't know where to search for succubus porn fanfic.

I got tired of seeing things on my dash that I didn't want to reblog on Nerdy Cookies because they weren't topical, so: Anthology of What? Reblog if you have a reblogging blog.

I am soliciting icon suggestions.

Braaains...!

Getting out of bed this morning was a struggle. The bus company moved my station so I had a longer walk, although the wait for the bus was perhaps less frustrating because the station wasn't so crowded. I am coughing pretty badly now, but on and off. I should go to the doctor, but I just remembered I've been sitting on a codeine prescription that I never filled, that he gave me for just this purpose. There's a pharmacy pretty close to my place and that should buy me sometime.

Like is so hard, woe is me, etc. etc.

Today in braaains!: leeches and decision making.

I am looking at wall art to decorate my place. I love botanical illustrations so this collection is sort of a jackpot. I also found this hat which is not wall art but damn. Can I justify it? I also want one of Ursula Vernon's prints but deciding which will be hard.

This anthropology and population genetics blog is both fascinating and confusing.

Sea unicorns and etc. I am pretty much addicted to this video and squiddles in general.

Last but not least: I am ludicrous and have not realized that this classroom has wireless until halfway through class.

One of my nerdycookies posts has gotten a lot of action. I opened my e-mail sometime this morning (I think) and I had about fifty new messages, almost all of which were notifications for this one post. A bunch of new followers, too. :) They are pretty awesome cupcakes, but I think it was the multi-nerdity that did it. I mean, Daleks and the Mad Hatter in one sugary post? Hell yeah.

This week I did a bit of frog dissecting. It was gross and fascinating and a little exciting. And very funny, because everyone who stayed in the lab to watch the gory bits was passing around all sorts of weird jokes. School-wise, the thingamajig that simulates and measures the nerve was more interesting, because I am not really going into zoology or anything. But the most interesting thing by far was that the lab was full of old taxidermies, mostly birds, with one enormous, terrifying-looking dolphin that sort of lurked on top of one of the cabinets waiting to catch the looker unawares. It freaked me the fuck out. I will never believe the myth of dolphin cuteness again.

Oh! I forgot follow Friday as usual but some people need to join [community profile] pose_as_a_comm so that I don't feel like I'm talking to myself.

Tonight for supper I made rice with onions, carrots and zucchini, and I cooked the vegetables as little as possible with the hopes of avoiding the mushiness that is often their lot. It actually came out awesome and I have enough for (some of) the week. Shopping plus cooking success! I win at being a grownup!

It turns out I forgot to tell some of my friends I was following them on Tumblr. That was an interesting conversation.

Anyway.

Nerdy Cookies

This morning I was bored so I made a Tumblr: Nerdy Cookies. There are three posts. I am also sitting on some links for later. It will probably update a lot this week, and then never again until April, or thereabouts. My quest for referential sweetmeats has lead me to discover a lot of languishing Google search terms. Truly, has no one ever made a batch of supervillain cupcakes? Distressing.

Oh, and certain people don't need to worry that they're being stalked, just because their personal Tumblr blogs are being followed by someone they've never heard of. It's me.

How, do you ask, can I tell that Chris Sims of Chris's Invincible Super-Blog loves me and wants me to be happy?

This is how. (WARNING: Link in NSFW and may or may not ruin your childhood.)

I spam for great justice.
lea_hazel: Don't make me look up from my book (Basic: Reading)
Reviews for The Gaslight Dogs are starting to pour in. Funny thing is, the review mentions two protagonists and explains them in a way that already makes it clear to me that I'll almost definitely have the opposite reaction to them. Almost definitely.

The best part is, it's not a hardcover, so no waiting for the paperback because it's already out. The worst part is, I am way too busy with school and I just bought some books and I still have a whole pile of gift and loan books I haven't read. Most likely, I won't read it till September or so.

ETA: I have made [syndicated profile] karin_lowachee_blog_feed for follow Friday, although it hasn't started updating yet.
lea_hazel: Don't make me look up from my book (Basic: Reading)
This is a huge list of sf/f/h book review blogs. It doesn't give much by the names, which are often non-indicative, but it's a good place to start. Finding the right reviewer is so hard.

On the topic of werewolves and paranormal romance, I just stumbled upon this creative review of two popular PR series about women shapeshifters. It's pretty solidly informative. For example, it highlights something that's been bothering me for a while.

Spoilers? Or is it too predictable to count? )

Mermaids!

MERMAIDS! FUCK YEAH!

Mermaids in the Mediterranean! Mermaids in manga! Mermaids in really kind of scary short stories! Mermaids (that are actually selkies) in paranormal romance! Mermaids, mermaids everywhere!

Mermaids that are seals inside my head!

Also: fantasy blogs! review blog and interview/miscellanea blog. I've been looking for fantasy blogs. Sure, I won't be ordering any new books for a while, but I like reading reviews to keep things in mind. Fantasy! Fuck yeah!
