Purim Gifts 2012 was very gratifying for me. I wrote seven short ficlets and created six graphics. I enjoyed making all of them and they were well-received by recipients, and some others. I also got three fabulous ficlets and some awesome art.

Almost Well-Matched (...not the cleverest name) is a Farscape/Homestuck crossover in three parts. Aeryn Sun finds herself captive of the Troll Empress. I poke a little fun at vast, conquering space empires, but it's all in good fun. They came out surprisingly funny, or at the very least, I laughed when I wrote them. Since I'm in the habit of considering myself a poor humorist, it was quite refreshing. The graphics are quite basic, but I indulged in a good few hours of surfing to find just the right images to cut and paste.

After that I picked up a pinch hit and squeezed it out at the last minute. I only started watching Community recently, I tore through three seasons in a semester, and writing these (combined with the approaching second half of season three) threw me into another binge of rewatching. I also processed a bit of my dissatisfaction with holiday-themed episodes into a fluff-piece - Annie throws a Purim party for all her friends and puts on a show of the Megillah. The second and third pieces weren't as well-thought out, and consequently they meandered off-course in the writing. I figure that's why they weren't noticed as much.

Shadow Theater Presents: The Megillah of Esther is exactly what the title says. I made an effort to throw in all sorts of little characterization moments, but it's a vignette with no plot and no conflict. Friend-fluff, if you will.

Britta Wants to Help (Again) veered the most off-course. Originally I was going to connect this to political goings-on, until I figured out that a fun, cute gift-basket of holiday treats is not an awesome place to focus a fic on reproductive rights. For posterity, the original title of the story was going to be Help, My Vagina Is Being Persecuted By an Evil Vizier.

History of Early Christianity was going to focus on the friendship between Annie and Shirley, while lending a more charitable outlook to Shirley's devoutness. It became a bit more of an ensemble dialogue melee, but I think I brought back on subject in the last few lines. It's hard to judge what's rushed in these sort pieces.

I ended up enjoying Shadow Theater Presents so much that I wrote a tag for it, which I posted less than an hour before extras were revealed: She Should Be Queen. It's a self-indulgent focus on Vashti, but I'm not the only one who did it, so I'm allowed.

The gifts I got were fabulous. > Redglare: S33K TH3 HUNTR3SS. (Part 1 of 2) and > Disciple: Tell her the deal. (Part 2 of 2) are a two part story dealing with Redglare discovering the religion of the Signless. Alien Jesus was basically one of the redeeming factors of the ancestor arc to me, so I loved this. TOD4Y 1 4M 4 S3LF-SUPPLY1NG 1NK1NG D3V1C3 is based on a fanon that spun off from an off-hand comment about Terezi "not knowing anything about Troll Jegus". For a character that's so complex, Terezi usually only gets shown licking stuff (and people) in fics, so it was wonderful to have this little tidbit of her. Now the scene is ripe for a fic discussing the fascinating contrast between Terezi and her ancestor!

I also read a bunch of other stuff I liked.

Of All the Gin Joints is a Biblical space A/U in three parts: 1, 2, 3. It's as awesome as it sounds.

Scenes from a Competitive Work Environment is basically the only fic for The Good Wife I've ever read. I hesitated, due to being a bit but critically behind on canon at all times, but it was character-based and very enjoyable. It tapped into that canonical feeling of dysfunction and depravity gently hinted at and swept under a thick luxurious rug over waxed wooden floors. It's hard to describe and it was a bit hard to grasp while reading, but appropriately so.

I... could have sworn I had other recs? I can't remember them right now, and I've been working on this post long enough. It's really high time I got to my reading, anyway.
