I am now reading an article that uses the phrase "negatively valenced hedonic tone". Still trying to figure out exactly what that means, but so far, as near as I can tell, it means "it makes you feel bad".

...I've only come across 'valence' in chemistry and linguistics. I'm trying to think of how it works in that phrase. And failing!

It's apparently from the same source as "ambivalence", which explains a lot.
