Purimgifts 2023 Letter!
Sunday, 8 January 2023 20:15If by some fluke, I forget to fill this in properly in time, you can look up my old letters. Most of what's in last year's holds.
Plus, I am always open to any masquerade-related fic. <3
15/1 update: I am so, so sorry that this took so long, and please consider everything in this letter optional!
Fallen London | Echo Bazaar
I enjoy FL's particular mix of horror and humor, and especially the satirical elements. For canonically Jewish characters, how about Dr. Schlomo? Or any prominent Jewish figure from the turn of the 19th who could be FL-ified.
For female characters, I particularly adore the Duchess and the Gracious Widow.
As for being persecuted by evil viziers, FL's entire cosmology revolves around issues of status quo versus transgression/revolution, so you could interpret this on multiple axes.
True Pretenses - Rose Lerner
I adore both Lydia and Ash, and frankly, the whole supporting cast. I like Ash's stubborn ambivalence about his Jewish background. I think it would be funny and poignant to put them in a situation where Ash feels a sudden affinity to his Judaism and has to explain it to Lydia. For example, being invited to a masquerade party that happens to fall on Purim. Lydia knows even less about Jewish holidays than the average modern gentile, so this could be challenging to explain.
Agatha Christie's Poirot (TV)
I think Poirot's strength is that his deductions are always based on psychological reasoning, and an understanding of why people do what they do. I'm reminded of holiday-themed mysteries like "The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding" in which holiday traditions play a role in the mystery (not necessarily murder).
Arcane: League of Legends (Cartoon 2021)
I love Vi and Caitlyn a lot (as either friends/partners or romantically), but I also love Mel, and I think she's chronically under-appreciated.
Knives Out (2019)
Similar to Poirot, but a bit more modern. I think it would be fun to have a Purim-themed mystery. And, of course, foiling persecution by evil viziers is practically Benoit's specialty.
Original Work
You can feel free to go wild, here. I love fantasy and science fiction, but I'm not averse to contemporary settings. Themes that are subtly anti-imperialist (or less subtly so) are near and dear to my heart. You could even mix and match ideas from my other prompts.
Creator's Choice of Fandom
You might browse my exchange tag and take a gander at my past Purimgifts or Yuletide letters, and get an idea of some of the fandoms that I've requested in the past.
Spinning Silver - Naomi Novik
I found the het-centric ending of the book rather dispiriting and disappointing. I love Miryem, Irina, and Wanda, in any combination. I'm also deeply fond of the special bond between Wanda and Miryem's parents, especially her mother.
Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (2020)
For a Jewish harlequin, there is no better time than Purim. I would love to see Harley taking the spirit of Purim to heart as an excuse to go around sowing benign (more-or-less) chaos, and actively resisting the evil viziers of the world.
SPY x FAMILY (Anime)
Secret identities and masquerades mix very well, I'm just saying.
Untitled Goose Game (Video Game)
The goose is the spirit of Purim chaos, personified. I also enjoy "goose of soul bond enforcement" type AUs, where the goose's honkfulness serves a purpose in the world's cosmology, even if humans don't always appreciate that.
