Purimgifts 2020 Dear Author Letter
Wednesday, 8 January 2020 21:43Dear author!
This is very exciting. I love Purim and this is one of my favorite fandom events every year. I've never failed to enjoy my gifts in the holiday spirit, and I know I'll enjoy your gifts, too.
General likes: I love the season, so a masquerade theme would be super cool. I love Jewish fanon interpretations. For fantastical or SFnal fandoms, I love worldbuilding that touches on Jewish-adjacent subjects, like what it means to be a religious minority, especially in canons that neglect that aspect of worldbuilding. Jewish traditions as interpreted through the lense of fantastical worldbuilding. I love bi and pan characters and gender noncomforming characters, soft gentle nurturing men, and cultures that value skills and virtues that aren't stereotypically masculine. I love relationships that skirt the line between platonic and romantic. I love friendships, and especially family or mentor relationships, that are complex and loaded with contradictory emotions and long history.
If you choose to write E-rated/NSFW (which is welcome, but far from necessary) I value explicit consent over "mood" and I always appreciate any sex scenes that break the mold. Vanilla is fine but if going for something kinkier, I appreciate bondage and painplay over dom/sub dynamics. Love respectful and friendly friends with benefits dynamics, too.
General DNWs: No interest in explicit or graphic violence. Prefer no sexual or domestic violence, but if it's a backstory element that's necessary to the story, prefer if it's non-explicit and in the past. Prefer recovery narratives in general. I am especially sensitive to narratives about abusers who couch their abuse in affectionate terms e.g. "I am doing this for your own good" so please avoid those. Background homophobia or sexism is okay but I don't enjoy stories that focus on overcoming internalized oppression.
Fandom-specific: if you want prompts, have a look, but I covered all my DNWs above, so this section is totally optional.
Alpennia Series - Heather Rose Jones: The Mystic Marriage was my favorite book and Antuniet is my favorite heroine, but I also have a soft spot for Serafina. I love Anna a lot and before I read Mother of Souls I had a weird headcanon that Tavit was Jewish and they would end up flirting.
Cinders (Visual Novel): I still love the relationship between Cinders, Gloria and Sophia most, in all its amazing complexity. Gloria doesn't get much love but she's a complex character and her recovery arc is really interesting to me. There's barely time to touch on it in canon.
Seven Kingdoms: The Princess Problem (Visual Novel): Honestly, I would love to see something involving the dynamic between Constance, Zarad and Aamir. With or without the Arland!MC or Corval!MC showing up. I would also be interested in your worldbuilding explorations of religion, because it's an element that's present in canon, but never properly explored, especially given its obvious importance to Wellin and Arland especially.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018): I love all the characters but especially Entrapta. Not in an idealized way, but as her own abstracted and amoral FOR SCIENCE self. Entrapta's scientific journals observing Eternia's religious customs would be hilarious.
The Dragon Prince (Cartoon): There are five human kingdoms, and yet we hear nothing about religion throughout the show. How do the continent's religions deal with the idea of blood magic? How are magical animals perceived in the theology of souls? Did Viren address this philosophical quandary when he taught Claudia magic? What about in the other kingdoms? Or, you know, Janai/Amaya in a sexy masquerade setting.
Carmen Sandiego (Cartoon 2019): I love Julia's role as the "straight man" of the cast and would love to see her in a solo adventure, possibly tracking a Persian-themed heist in spirit of the holiday. Or a flirty masquerade encounter with Carmen, that would also be cool.
Carmilla (Web Series): This one screams for the flirty masquerade.
Imperial Radch Series - Ann Leckie: I'm interested in the Radch religion, and specifically in the elements drawn from historical empires. The Radch absorbs the religions of the cultures it assimilates syncretically, but the books mention in passing that a recent attempt to absorb a monotheistic religion ran into difficulty.
