The Personal-ish 2016 Retrospective Post

lea_hazelChecking my blog, I realize it's not simple to immediately catalog how many blog posts I wrote in 2016. With a little more effort, I can say that 2016 brought twelve review posts, nine writing posts, four general meta posts, and four admin posts. More specifically, two "con report" posts, one each for Olamot and Icon, and two posts marking NaNoWriMo.
It's also been my first time attempting NaNo since 2007, and my very first time as a NaNo winner. Which is a pretty big deal. A pretty big deal, even if I ended up somewhat disappointed with my end product. I don't know that I'll be able to take the world and characters I created for November forward, with any kind of successful story. What I do know is that the experience was instructive, and has reawakened my passion for long-form storytelling. though I am still not convinced that I'm novelist material.
I started a new job in 2016, and I finished my second SFF writing workshop. I turned 32. I wrote a whole lot, although of course, never enough. I did *not* succeed in maintaining a habit of logging my daily wordcount (aside from my "daily pages" at 750words.com), so I don't have any fancy end of year charts. Except for the ones produced by the NaNoWriMo interface.
I finished some important things, and submitted to some publishing opportunities -- though, of course, never enough. I revived, populated, and eventually shut down my Patreon account. I started getting ARCs from publishers in exchange for reviews, which is actually pretty damn exciting.
All in all, imminent nuclear apocalypse aside, my life is going according to plan.
I am starting to think about creating a new Universe. I want a Universe, a sandbox of my own to play in. I've tried this exercise before and it ended up collapsing under its own weight, so I will probably be more cautious about it in the future, still, it's something I want to attempt. A fictional home to return to, if you will.
