Hey, us bastards aren't all bad! It's just the royal bastards who grew up able to see what they were missing out on you have to worry about. My dad is the heir of nothing in particular and married my mum in the end, thus the lack of self pitying angst :)
As a Brosca I spent a lot of time rolling my eyes any time a human noble (or noble-ish) character went on about how HORRIBLY OPPRESSED they were.
Yes, most bastards I've known in real life are perfectly personable. I guess these fictional rules don't apply that well. I'm sorry, I probably should have said that better.
Dragon Age has a strange mixture of high and low fantasy, especially when it applies to a character like Alistair. On the one hand they want the corrupt nobility and the thieves who grew up on the streets with no hope, but on the other hand, they have demon minions you can kill with a clear conscience and, well, Alistair.
I guess this is an effect of being a game and wanting to give all sorts of players the options they like.
I'm curious if the other commoner origins are as grim as the dwarf one, or if Orzammar is basically the pit that it appears to be.
Haha, no, it's cool, royal bastards in fantasy fiction are a whole other thing, I was just teasing :)
The only other "commoner" origin is city elf, and it's pretty grim but in a different way. Elves get a pretty poor deal for reasons other than class. I've always thought it would be cool to have a human commoner story but the closest you get is Dragon Age 2 (about a noble born family on the run who become refugees)
