There's something funny about The L Word. It will do the most ludicrous soapy bullshit drama story lines, right alongside something that basically goes out and says something I've been trying to crystallize for ages, and this episode is about five years old. I'm not even talking about the inconsistency of the characters, that can be brushed aside as a combination of multiple writers and crudely-drawn personal growth. It's the mixed tone that gets to me. First there's the women of the upper crust who behave almost exactly like straight women (who behave almost exactly like straight men). Then you turn a corner and it's... I don't even know. This juxtaposition of lesbian porn for men with (fictionally) authentic female desire.

It would be much easier to write about this show if I was talking about Bette fucking doe eyes trick and how sick to death I am of it. Or the curious phenomenon whereby the recurring and guest characters are 5000% more attractive to me than the "hot lady" leads. Or how I want to like Alice but I don't. Or that no matter how much I want a show full of queer ladies, the only regular who's straight is actually my favorite. Or butts. I like butts apparently. But then I need to talk about how much this show tries to slip under the radar, or maybe it's not slipping under the radar but trying to pass itself off as cleverer than it is, who knows.

This whole screed is deeply incoherent, because the show confuses me. I paused in the middle of an episode to write this, which tells you a lot, I guess.
