Original Fiction
Sunday, 10 July 2011 14:50Now that reveals are in, I can admit/brag that Cerulean/Past Stain (weak title because I'm indecisive) is my contribution. The prompt was, "A set of cursed brushes makes something strange happens with the paintings when it's used." I used the idea of art taking on a life of its own and ran with it in a sort of meta direction. The story is a little over 8000 words long.
I was a bit nervous about this story, because I was intending to center the story around the relationship between the writer/artist and her main character, building up to a confrontation or series of confrontations. The story got away from me a little, despite my writing and editing simultaneously and trying to keep a firm structure to it. The emphasis on the character's name was not at all planned, and Archer, the roommate character, turned out much more interesting/important than I expected.
I think I'd like to revisit the idea of a creator/character confrontation at a later time, possibly from a little angle. I know the idea of metafiction seems well-worn by now, but I still feel like there's a lot that can be done with it.
As a hilarious anecdote, when the prompt list went up, I was reading it and every other prompt looked like it would make a brilliant Homestuck fanfic. So I posted about it to fanfic flamingo. Also, I will make a recs post eventually, but I've only read a very few of the stories so far.
