Is It Reading Wednesday?
Wednesday, 4 December 2013 15:54Well, it's Wednesday here, and I am finally reading again. Maybe it's because I have seven sexy new books in my library.
Earlier this week I tore my way through Soulless, staying up later than I intended at least twice. This book (and the entire Parasol Protectorate series) was recommended to me multiple times by people with very disparate tastes. I can see why. I quite like the heroine, although I'd like her more if she spent less time ruminating about her hideous ugliness. It's a very bad habit for fictional heroines, and leads to gushing from heroes, and that makes me unhappy. As for the hero, well. He was definitely a character in the book? Uh.
Steampunk is not really my thing. It's hard (for me) to romanticize Victorian England and what's more, it lies in that uncomfortable lull between 'known enough to be comfortable' and 'unknown enough to be a novelty'. Not my setting of choice. Still, the book milked the time period for all that it's worth, and even had a bit of a science vs. magic plot that didn't feel particularly rehashed.
When I finished that I started on The Thief, which has also been recommended to me multiple times over the years since its publishing. And is also a first in a series. Where the later books generally received more praise. Oh look, I have a theme. But before I could get very far in, I got a package slip for the paperback I ordered from bookdep about three weeks ago.
Now I'm reading Naamah's Curse. Please save me from this delicious, evil crackfic candy.
