I have Thoughts on Game of Thrones 1x1-2.

My basic reaction to ep 2 is GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOG!!!!!!!!!eleventy!

GOOD DOG. BEST FRIEND.

Let me pull up the wiki entry so I can spell everyone's name correctly.

I like Tyrion best so far, no surprise there. I was a bit miffed to hear that his status as the lecherous, sarcastic champion of the downtrodden is not so much in the books. Just on that I was prepared to give JRRM a bit of credit. The relationship between him and Jon Snow looks like it could shape up to be very interesting indeed. Dare I get my hopes up that they'll have more than a bit of interaction?

Jon is totally boned. I mean. Really. It almost seems like he might be more boned than the Stark kids, who are all very definitely boned, especially the older girl (Sansa?). On the other hand, him getting the white "runt" pup seems like it might be a false underdog move, given the symbolism associated with white animals in general. Like, the owner of a white wolf companion really ought to be marked for Great Destiny Under the Gods' Auspices or some shit. On the other other hand, maybe he's just being marked for epic woobification.

Stark kids: soooooo boooooned! My brother helpfully confirmed that Sansa not having her wolf companion puts her in extra special danger. Man, I'm not sure where her Disney princess delusions are supposed to come from, since that seems like a circa 1800s syndrome, and this setting is marked mostly with circa 12th-14th century accoutrements. To the best of my knowledge. I am sort of hoping that Bran muffin (good luck trying to get me to not give people ridiculous nicknames) wakes up with mystical dire wolf powers or some such. Alas, this is a magic-free setting! Arya is bait, and I haven't decided whether I'm taking it yet. Rob is... uh... gimme a second, I'll come up with something! Wait, no. Rob is boned, maybe slightly less than everyone else since he's at home and surrounded by his own people.

Catelyn has potential as a character who Gets Shit Done. Not surprisingly, if she does manage to Get Shit Done it will only be because her husband isn't around to get in the way. Then again, she could also spend the rest of the season praying, or ceding control to her barely-legal son.

Ned seems like he's gonna be the character who makes me go STOP WAFFLING AND FUCKING DO SOMETHING, YOU THRICE-DAMNED UNBELIEVABLE FUCKING JACKASS. In actualfax, he is already this character. There's no way he can be the King's Official Fucking Jackass (or whatever they call it) and not get his hands dirty. I bet he'll be all ";_; thank god my son can't see me so ~disgraced~ and ~dishonored~" while trying, and failing, to Get Shit Done.

Honestly, I wept at Cersei's story about her son, even though I was 89% sure she was lying about it to get Catelyn's sympathy. Because according to tradition I would say Sansa is supposed to be her responsibility now. In theory. I mean, this is a mentoring relationship I would like to see, but I get the feeling it's not that sort of show, given the one female mentoring scene we have had so far. D: Also if Sansa were Cersei's protege, she would be either 65% less boned, or at least 300% more boned. Mainly I adore Lena Heady so much. Wait, I wonder if she emphasized her dead kid's black hair to distinguish him from the three (?) extremely Lannister-looking royal brats she has now.

Jaime is entertaining but unsympathetic, deliberately I suspect.

The king is sort of pathetic and inconsequential. I found a sort of parallel between him and Sansa in the wolf trial scene, I got the feeling that they were both too self-absorbed to make a decision either way. The thing is, Sansa at least has an opportunity to grow out of it.

Targaryens: I am sort of impressed by Viserys' sliminess. He broke the dial on the slime-o-meter. He makes Jaime look more than superficially charming. He makes many villains I can think of look like Righteous Among the Nations. My feelings on up-to-11-sliminess villains are constantly changing, so I'm not sure if I will enjoy hating him or just be sort of bored by his excesses. Daenerys is so far completely dull. It would take an enormous amount of work to get me to tolerate her storyline.

Khal Drogo: I can't even. I. Can't. Even. I feel so bad for Jason Momoa.

Who else? I am intrigued by the fellow with the scar, the Hound? It's hard to be more than intrigued, since nothing is known about him yet. My brother said, "Pay attention to the man with the dog's head helmet" so I did.

The wolves are the best characters hands down. Dire Wolves, as few people seem to know, are an actual extinct species of canid who thrived in the Americas about two million years ago. Their fossils are found in La Brea, for example. Like so.

Whoops I got paleontology on your epic fantasy.
