It's "Celebrate Bisexuality Day", a phrase which turns up < 5000 results in Google, as of about ten minutes ago. Yeah.

I guess that says something about the state of bisexuality and social acceptance, although I think it's something more complex than might be readily apparent. Acceptance of bisexuality is dichotomous: in the world at large, it's token and barely visible, or else totally absent, or else deliberately struck down. In small, bi-positive enclaves, bisexuality is so accepted that "every day is Celebrate Bisexuality Day." In some of these places, it's generally regarded that everyone is bi (which I disagree with profoundly, but that's a rant for another day).

Not that I don't love me some John Barrowman. NAKED. I do. And I do admit to reading queerness (and genderqueerness) into just about every fictional character I identify with at all. And I do love the pants off The Sims 2 and complain that Nightlife tampers with Sims' automatic bisexuality, although that's mainly for other reasons, and another rant for another day. It's just that the everything/nothing attitude so espoused by speculative fiction seems to regard the simplest option, the one that exists all around us: some people are bisexual, some people are not. And it is this option that most affects my social reality, and my social reality is just not reflected. As if bisexuality is something that humanity needs to change in order to achieve, like FTL travel or a cure for cancer.

I wanted to do a compilation of links about bisexuality, but ended up blathering incoherently instead. For the record, Hazel Inc. has been celebrating bisexuality every day since 2005.
