Okay, okay, so I'm behind on my meta. For compensation, have this random thought:

Why has no one (that I'm aware of) ever written vampires to be pale only when they're underfed? After all, even if you remove all melanin from the skin (which, for most people, requires more than never seeing daylight again) the skin will still be colored pink on account of the hemoglobin in the blood. Vampires feed off of blood. Ergo, they will be pale when hungry, and flushed when they've just fed.

My logic is flawless.

Laurel K. Hamilton's vampires gain color from feeding. I mean, they're still pale, but they don't look so dead.
