Choice of Rebels - an extremely spoilery analysis/squee
There's a lot I could squee about, but I think by now it's obvious which part of the story I'm most invested in.
So, Breden. Right.
In my mind Breden is a little fixed as a she because I had them as a female character in my first two playthroughs (including Reynard's game, where I both romanced Breden and replayed every chapter but the first three times). As such I'll be referring to Breden as "she" throughout.
( spoilers and speculation )

DAO Fandom
I have a question about Dragon Age fandom. I mean, I could wade right in, but I'm at Denerim right now and I already have more of an idea of what to expect in the future than I'd like.

Dragon Age Origins Adventures
Last night I finally installed Dragon Age: Origins. I was going to set up my character and play for like an hour or two, just to get a good feel for the game. During the character's introduction mission, I got stuck in a fire trap and had to repeat an escape sequence 4-5 times before I managed to avoid getting myself and my companion killed by guards. By then it was getting kind of late, so naturally I just went and played for three more hours. Mysteriously, while I was trying to save and close the game, my mouse flipped out and I had to change the batteries.

Maybe I'll play all night tonight. That's what the holiday of freedom is for, right?

Exam Time
So here I am again, attempting to connect my study materials to real life, fandom and/or porn, while nursing a stalking cold and a headache that feels as though Betty Crocker is trying to mind-control me through a handsome red tiara. Meanwhile I still haven't read the most recent monthly package of comics because I planned to do it on Friday but was just too goddamn exhausted, and the book I have been making gradual headway on since Dragon*Con has reached its point of WTF no return. I wish I was in bed reading or mainlining a new TV series. My bed is cozy and using it to study makes me sad.
Both my favorite fandoms are making me sad, both of them because of shipping. The only novelty is, in one case it's the f/f shippers who have gone rabid, illogical, fling flaming poo mad. As for the other Lost Girl-related stuff, that's to be expected. Ah, the mild social discomforts of being the "bad bisexual" in any given group of vagina-lovers. I could go on, but I don't feel like it. As for Homestuck, at this point I truly think I'd be happy if Jake English just up and died. Maybe I should do a whole essay about how hard it isfor me to relate to male characters.
Just my luck, I get a canonically queer intellectual character that I actually sort of like, and his entire existence causes my primary fandom to go up in a BFBVFS.
I miss my Eeyore icon. Where'd it get off to?

20 Ships I Ship Meme
I am more of an antishipper than a shipper, it's sort of a thing with me. And yet, here I am, managing to collect a series of 20 13 combinations of characters I like together, romantically.
1. Think of up to 20 ships you support.
2. List them using descriptions of the characters involved rather than their names.
3. Have your audience guess as many of the ships as they can.
4. Fandom hints will be given if asked in the comments.
Not all of them are Homestuck ships.
( Not 20 ships, a few less. )
Since I hardly ever talk about shipping on DW, ask for as many hints as you like. Fandoms are live action TV, animation, comics, webcomics and books.

Rare pairings month on
![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)
I finished reading Robin Hobb's Dragon Haven this morning. I pretty much agree with everything written here, but have a few more words of my own to add, when I'm a bit more energetic. Without a doubt, the most satisfying parts of the series so far are the xenofic parts written from dragon (and serpent) POV, and the relationship between dragon Sintara and keeper Thymara. It's better than the first book, and I am looking forward to books 3 and 4 in the series, but I still have reservations.
Today I had an idea for an original short story. Because I'm sick and I have no energy to write, I'm putting off anything remotely productive until my various cavities are dry and I stop getting surprise fever chills in the afternoon. And am able to eat three square meals a day (right now I'm at two small meals plus a snack). Even then, I am behind on my fic obligations and I have fifty things I want to finish. Maybe this idea will solidify better in my head by the time I'm ready to give it a shot. Right now it's pretty webby.
IDK what else. I wish I had the energy to write.

Fandom
This past week I got anonymous kudos on (almost) all my AO3 fics in succession. I am pretty sure it was all the same anon, since there was a hit on my
captchalogue collection, then one each on a bunch of fics that don't usually get much attention. Including one totally obscure Veronica Mars fic.
fannish5: Fanon 'facts'. I'm using the definition of fanon where I can include stuff that's just in my head, as opposed to "not actually canon but commonly accepted in fandom as such."
Lost Girl: Until canon actually states otherwise (which seems pretty likely) I am still assuming that Trick ( possible spoilers through speculation )
Veronica Mars: Despite that it goes against everything canon says, including the trailer for the fourth season that never happened, I think Veronica would make a terrible FBI agent. I see her giving it her all, then being disappointed and burning out after about five years, going back to PIing but with better credentials. I know it's almost painfully noir, but hey, if the shoe fits.
Runaways: 1. To everyone's shock, Chase is the only one who eventually goes to college. 2. Although he'd never admit it, he comes to think of Victor as the best friend he ever had. 3. Molly becomes a superhero under her own name. 4. After her eighteenth birthday, Karolina goes on a traditional young adult 'finding herself' trip... in space. 5. Klara gets used to the whole time travel shtick and ends up settling down in the twenty eighth century.
MLP:FIM: Mr. and Mrs. Cake are Pinkie's second cousins - they share the illustrious laughing Grandma Pie. Pinkie takes much more after her grandma than either of her parents. Her dad was sort of a fluke/black sheep, and her sisters take after him: one inherited the rock farm and the other is an accountant.
Avatar: The Last Airbender: Once she proves herself trust-worthy, not to mention entertaining, Ty Lee enters a triad relationship with Sokka and Suki.

Lines in the Sand
I want to do a whole post about the Paul Simon concerts because mksdauyfr jdaifuwiej ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and I believe that basically sums it up. So I will do that eventually, maybe tonight. For an old dude, he sure is energetic!
Also from Thursday I think I want to make a post elaborating about the Kushiel books. For the record, my thoughts re: those books include both positives and negatives, and also quite a lot ofgentle loving mockery. I do love them! But in that special fannish way that goes 'lol!' a lot.
Memo to brain: it is not okay to want to make X-Men fanfic out of everything you read while studying for a genetics exam.
It's been eleventy billion years since I remembered to make a
fannish5 post, so I want to answer this week's but I can only think of one off the top of my head: When a character rejects another character romantically, I will never be able to ship them. Ever. If the ship manifests in canon I will resent it forever. All the examples I can think of are from Homestuck of course but I have a thing with characters getting what they want too often. When the 'what' that they want is a person, that magnifies pretty much exponentially.
Bottom line is I resent romantic entitlement in characters.

Fringe S3
I lost track of Fringe earlier this year and now I'm starting to catch up. The flashback episode put me off (I thought it was a particularly poor effort, and inconsistent with canon, in addition to hitting a pet peeve of mine), but I'm giving it another chance. Now the next after episode has ( Read more... ) and I don't know what to think.
Although I will note again that this is a show in which OT3 may literally save the world.

Feferi/Sollux on Homestuck. I mean, I like them, and I was never a TA/AA shipper (I pale ship them), so it didn't bother me. But even looking back, I don't think there was so much as a hint before the kiss. And after, there wasn't much about them being matesprits, right up until the end.

Fannish Five: Mawwiage
Top five married couples is a theme that moved a lot of people to respond. Because I always want to respond to FF and always forget, here's a lightning post before I go back to transgenic fruit flies:
- Wash and Zoe - Firefly. This is cheating because everyone picks them. Truth is, I shipped Wash and Zoe and I still pretty much ship Wash and Zoe. Established relationship dynamic is one awesome way to get me to shake off my shipping malaise, just because it's so much more interesting than yet another tedious, predictable will-they/won't-they junior high style melodrama. Truth is, one of my big Firefly regrets was that this dynamic wasn't explored more. I really think established relationships are just much more interesting.
- Kara and Anders - BSG new style. Nobody said I had to pick functional relationships, right? I went back and forth (and back... and forth...) on this while watching the show and since, and ultimately I love them. I love them because Anders had a devotion to Kara that was both true and dysfunctional, it made their lives (even though he was like 5K years old!) and it also ruined them, both of them. Which is just BSG in a nutshell, to me. Every relationship in that show encapsulated its themes in some way, and to me, Kara and Anders did this even more than Starbuck and Apollo, even though they were the fandom OTP.
- Molly and Arthur - Harry Potter. I am the biggest fucking sap, okay? I lie when I say otherwise. The truth is, I'm a huge fucking romantic sap, and the only reason I resent romances is because they're not up to my standards. James and Lily? Not up to my standards. Ron and Hermione? Meh. Harry and Ginny? Don't get me started. Molly and Arthur? Hell yes. Hell. Fucking. Yes.
- Ysandre and Drustan - Kushiel's Legacy. You know how fantasy novels make overtures towards the idea of political marriages but never really commit to the idea? The Kushiel books do exactly this with Ysandre's love life, and I just don't give a fuck, because it's worth it. They are both monarchs in their own right, their marriage is complicated by the need to travel back and forth all the time, not to mention managing two kingdoms in an uneasy alliance, over all the cultural gaps that never seem to run out. Their daughters give them the runaround in every conceivable way. And yet, Ysandre went to war in order to secure her marriage, in the most dumbfuck romantic fantasy way imaginable. And because love is sacred, she actually would have gotten in trouble if she'd done otherwise.
- Mortimer and Dina - The Sims 2. I know, right. The story setup is that Dina is a young, hot gold-digger and Mortimer is a rich old widower whose adult daughter is the same age as her. Most people played her that way, too. But I figured, hey, the game engine doesn't lie. If there's a red heart over them, then they're in love, and the fact that Dina also gains aspiration from the fact that she married a rich Sim doesn't bother me. TL;DR Dina married Mort for his money but I played them as though they were really in love. Dina also got along great with Alexander, although Cassandra never warmed to her.
