Everybody Ship Merabela!

This is my post promoting Dragon Age II's Isabela/Merrill pairing for femslashex's 2013 rounds. Singups are only open for a bit longer, so it's close to last chance to request or offer my very favoritest femslash pairing!

In brief: Dragon Age II is the story of the rise to power of an incredibly boring man/woman named Hawke, in a fantastical city named Kirkwall, where constant political strife puts everyone in peril and it's up to our totally not intrepid protagonist to try and fix everything... and fail miserably. Hawke is accompanied by the obligatory ragtag bunch of misfits, among which are an ex-pirate and an elven outcast.

Isabela is the captain of a pirate ship, with all associated complications. She's a liar, a cheat, and a thief, and incredibly dangerous with a blade. Her reputation as a pirate gained her the appellation 'Queen of the Eastern Seas'. After stealing a valuable artifact from dangerous people, her ship sank and she became stranded in Kirkwall. Because of her troubled past, Isabela is very free with her sexuality, but hesitant when it comes to romantic ties. She's one of the few people in Kirkwall who don't give a rat's ass about politics. Isabela looks out for Isabela.

Merrill is an elf from a nation of nomadic polytheistic tribes, who have been wandering the world ever since the powerful church sacked their lands because of their heretical beliefs. As a mage, she was expected to be a leader among her people, in contrast to human society which often fears and mistrusts magic users. A confrontation between herself and her mentor led her to leave her people and settle in the decrepit ghetto of the human-ruled city of Kirkwall. Merrill is devoted to the history, culture and tradition of her people, and she's willing to make any sacrifice to preserve them.

Sometimes canons include two lady characters who never really talk to each other. Other times they trap them in a love triangle with a male lead, so that all their interactions revolve around romantic rivalry. Every once in a blue moon, two female characters share a strong canonical bond of friendship. This is one of those rare and precious cases.

Merrill admires Isabela because she's cunning and worldly, and has led an exciting life full of danger, adventure and sexy fun times. Isabela admires Merrill because she's kind, friendly, and tenacious, and she thinks she's a better person than herself. Isabela tells Merrill dirty stories from her past, and helps her adjust to the culture shock of living in a big and dangerous metropolis. Merrill is (almost) the only person who never judges Isabela's sexual escapades, and who really has faith in her as a better person than she thinks she is. Throughout a six year canon acquaintance their friendship is unshakable.

And their banter is hilarious.

They are two dangerous ladies who are also best friends, and despite being very different from each other, they love and respect each other. They can be cute (so cute!), fluffy, angsty, smutty, plotty, alternate universey... Basically anything! Really, there's a reason this is my favorite pairing. You can take it anywhere you like.
